THE EVIL KID'S KUALA LUMPUR BACKPACKING ADVENTURE™

Day One (Thursday ♦ 08/09/05)

[Sunny Singapore]

Rise and shine. Time checked, 8:45 am. Us, The Evil Kids roamed into the crowded morning subway with our oversized backpacks causing much obstruction. When we emerged out of Lavender station, it was approximately 9:30 am. Headed to Lavender's Ladies, and after whatever essential business we had accomplished, our stomachs growled to be fed before the long bus ride.

Just then, a conversation hit us while Cindy was buying something.

Seok: Hey what time is it now?
Cindy : Oh I forgot to wear my watch.
Seok:I KNEW IT! (roars)
Seok digged for her watch in her backpack and started to panic.
Seok:
Shit! Its already 10 am! Quick! We have got to run. 30 minutes left ( thinking that the bus was leaving at 10:30 am ).
Cindy: Huh oh ok (but i thought it leaves at 10 am?).

Our frantic footsteps brought us to the rundown Transnational Bus Terminal (located opposite Kallang Casket). We almost missed our 10 AM bus ride. Can u believe that? We were just in time to catch it. "Damn it!", Seok cursed and sweared in the coach, as it headed down to Tuas Checkpoint, not forgiving herself for being so careless.

6 hours of bus ride is no child's play. It takes alot of discipline and bladder control to remain in that very seat of yours. Anyhow, The Evil Kids remedy and advice to all people are (in no particular order) : 1) Don't drink so much water 2) Empty your bladder and stomach before you board the bus 3) Bring an empty plastic water bottle if you're a guy / gay.

[Kuala Lumpur]

Upon arrival at Puduraya Bus Station. 4 pm.

The road that we dislike the most. The air around this stretch along Puduraya Bus Station is extremely filthy due to the stream of heavy traffic.

From the bus station go passing the Shell Petrol Station, Thong Shin Hospital and Swiss Garden Hotel. Then turn left into Jalan Bukit Bintang and walk pass the Century Hotel, Federal Hotel and then you will come to BB Plaza Shopping center. The street across the BB Plaza is Changkat Bukit Bintang where our Lodge is located. We went down to this street passing the Radius International Hotel ( formerly known as Park Inn International) and about 100 meters up to the right you see a three storied light yellow coloured building. It's on the third floor of the building above Zino bar/ KingFisher Restaurant.

There is it! Our home away from home.

The stairscases

...leading us up to pondok heaven.

Ha! We didn't take alot of pictures of our lodge, so therefore we extracted some pictures from http://www.pondoklodge.com to let you have a more precise idea of how it looks like.

The kitchen!

This is the.. em.. what we call the Feast Eyes Area. Totally suitable corner to relax, take a nap and watch HBO on tv. Besides, ahem, our fellow Japanese hot hunks lodge mates' room was just next to this area. The Evil Kids' very much enjoyed their pretending-to-watch-street-fighters-on-tv sessions here.

Another corner perfect for an afternoon read.

Funky!

Our favourite spot.

The Pondok Lodge rooftop garden.

Room 5 was in a whole lot of a mess. No souls around then 'cept us. The air-con wasn't on and so it was kind of stuffy when we entered. Shoes, bags, shopping bags, towels, soaking wet bikinis waiting to be dried, Doraemon and teddy bears all over the place. Yes, you have guessed it right. All belongs to our two fellow dorm mates. Subsequently, after settling down for a while, we started to play Cindy's all time favourite game- The Guessing Game.

"Eh Eh where you think they're frm? Do you think they are angmoh?"

"Hmm.. let's see," Seok starts to inspect for more clues. "Miko. Wth. What kind of brand is that. I know! They're from.... CHINA!"

"Noo...I think they're from Taiwan or Hongkong? Can't be Angmoh right? Wait I think the guy behind the counter mentioned something like Ms. Sariko."

Golden triangle map. Directions? Maps? Please pass everything to Cindy. Seok's role is to kick ass(es) with her weapons- swiss knife/ parang. HAHA. yea right.

Guess what we ate when we first arrived? Bingo! KFC. Malaysian kampong chicken just taste better. Simply goluptious!

High-quality beef that we just couldn't afford.

Congestion.

Lot 10 (akin to Singapore's Paragon). Contrary to popular belief, shopping in KL isn't very entertaining or fruitful. The things in KL's Mango and Topshop are relatively higher than the ones sold in Singapore.

Hot pose man, uncle!

How about a one night stand? Okay, i'm just kidding.

Buying tibits and drinks in the middle of the night wasn't a problem to us at all, thanks to the ubiquity of 7-elevens around. There were at least 6 to 7 of them around Bukit Bintang.

Yoke's bar- unless you want to get fleeced, otherwise flee.

The famous stretch of street - bukit bitang- usually crowded with transexuals in the night.

The place for budget midnight supper, ranging from frog porridge to ice kachang.

On our way back to the lodge,

Seok: Fuck, i think something just landed on my head. (freezed)
Cindy: eeeeeeeeeeee I think it's bird shit!
Seok: DAMMIT!

Oh maggie I couldn’t have tried any more
You lured me away from home just to save you from being alone.
Maggie may.. ohh.. maggie mee from Singapore!

11 pm and there's Cindy setting up the appliances for the feast.

And here comes Seok fooling around with the metal cover lid.

Yahoooooo!

Oink.

Eating maggie noddles in the middle of the night on the rooftop garden was simply awesome. Yes, even if it was just simply maggie noodles (we miss it so so much).

Later, about 11 45 pm, we went down to the cyber centre near the lodge.

Back to our dorm. Roommates were back too. Found out that they are actually from Germany! They looked so sweet and pretty! How cool is that, sharing a room with German babes.

The first night sleep at Pondok Lodge wasn't exactly a pleasant one due to a couple of factors. Firstly, it was the over powering air-conditioning freezing us frozen hard. Poor Cindy being situated nearest to the air-con survived the night with just one thin layer of blanket while Seok used her huge backpack to cover her legs for some warmth. Secondly was those sudden involuntary expulsions of air from Seok's nose. AHHCHHUU! repeat that for another 10 to 15 times. That was how annoying it was. Seok tossed and turned uncomfortably causing the bunk bed to shake a little and at the same time trying to recover from the irritation (bet Cindy was cursing from above! Hah!). Anyway, consuming food/sweets is always the best remedy for Seok's sinus. Don't ask why, it just works for her. Knowing herself best, she digged for the packet of Pocky snack that she had bought back in Singapore and desperately wiping it out guttly. Wala! Pocky works wonders! Last but not least was the galling sounds of snores exhaling from the dear double-decker upstairs mate, Cindy. Unable to cope with the distraction, Seok so wanted to kick Cindy's bed from below but dozed off to sleep soon after that thought.

Oh, what a wonderful night.

Day Two ( Friday ♦ 09/09/05)

"Cindy wake up la"
"Ermm don't want. I want to sleep."

20 RM for a night in Pondok Lodge is dirt cheap I tell you. They even serve FREE breakfast. Two slices of toasted bread, one slice of banana cake, one Bridel unsalted butter and Heinz's strawberry jam each, a banana, and we could even choose between coffee or tea.

"Cindy wake up or else no breakfast for you!"

It's served in between 8 AM to 10 AM and as you have guessed, yes, we only woke up just in time for the last serving of yummy delights. We always ate our breakfast at Pondok Lodge's rooftop garden. What is a breakfast without enjoying the morning KL breeze (although the air is a little filthy. okay, very) and overview of Bukit Bintang, a busy top shopping area surrounded by posh, la-di-da hotels.

Laundry nearly killed us. But sneaking washing soda from the laundry room was such a thrill!

Smooth this time.

Light shining through the LRT's window.
Similar to Singapore's MRT, but a simpler version.

Seok: "eh why no swans one?"
Cindy: "i think too hot lar."

Yes Indeed!! The blazing sun was scorching our backs as we figured our way to Titiwangsa Lake.

The absence of swans in Titiwangsa lake dulled the whole scenery. Nonetheless, it's worth a visit if hot sun doesnt turn you off.

Dropped by Chow kit and Central Market which were a few stops away from Titiwangsa station.

Chow Kit market is KL's largest indoor market. Inside, narrow walkways lead through a maze of stalls laden with seafood of any variety and size, vegetables of numerous shapes and colour, meat, spices and loads and loads of fruit. Food stalls are in abundance as are those selling clothes, shoes cassettes and fabrics. All at reasonable prices.

Chow Kit Market is open daily from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Getting around suburban side of KL can be quite risky, especially Chow Kit. It's fraught with danger. Don't ever walk into the back alleys alone cause you might be sexually assaulted by god knows who. We were so vigilant to the extent that we even suspected two male natives (prowling behind us) were trying to rob us. Maybe we were just being paranoid.

Poor Cindy misplaced her adidas water bottle somewhere along our way to central market. Probably it now belongs to some nonentity who had purchased it from a local dealer who could have had found it, thus putting it up for grabs for 10 RM at his little kiosks along chow kit market. HA! Okay la. Don't cry.

Dig oriental antiques? Typical fashionable beaded accessories? Probably hoping to find some souvenirs to bring home to? Yes? Alright! Then central market is the perfect place for you! Feel free to haggle.

Cindy and KL's chinatown in background.

It was already 8 something when we sauntered to nearby Chinatown for more budget shopping. Bought 2 similar sling bags and set off to eat chinese - Horfun.

Tony & Guy latest rival- Thomas & Guys.

Eeeks! Whose dirty feet are those? yes! Suki oh Suki With the white painted toesnails.

The "evil" masks we bought in Central Market.

The luxury of staying in Bukit Bintang is that everything is of easy reach, especially food. This is only 1/15 of the entire stretch of road-side food stalls. wahhhhhhhhahahahahhaaa. Are you in for a feasttttt?

Thanks to Cindy, who insisted on visiting the cyber centre again, Seok had no choice but to accompany her there (for safety reasons obviously) till 1 30 am! Next, Cindy announced that she wants to try KL's TOPCHOICE ice cream.

It was already 2 am. Not wanting to switch on the lights to cause any disturbance to fellow dorm mates who were sleeping soundly, we sneaked and tip-toed our way into the room. Earlier that night before we left for the cyber centre, we remembered that one of our german dorm mates had already gone back to Germany while the other would still be sharing the dorm room with us till her boyfriend joined her in KL. Our dorm has two bunks and which means it could fit four people in that room. So someone's gotta occupy that vacant bed innit? Well, surprise surprise. Guess what? We then found out that we had another new dorm mate! How exciting? Not really. According to the lodge staffs, he is an arabic middle aged local man who had decided to book into Pondok Lodge out of convenience due to the fact that he has a fruit stall near the lodge. Plausible? Read on.

And so we saw him in the room. Appearing to be asleep, occupying the bed below the german girl's.
In total darkness, we shuffled back to our respective beds getting ready to turn in.

Seok: Psst! Cindy, I don't feel comfortable with this man around.
Cindy: Why? It's okay la. Just sleep.
Seok: Hey, i will not be able to sleep peacefully. What if he locks the room and does something nasty to us in the middle of the night? WHAT IF? Somemore he is a local? Don't you think it's a little odd for a local to book into a backpacker's lodge? Seriously, i don't feel too safe about this.
Cindy: PLEASE! You think too much.

We supposed that he was awaken by our whispers and fidgets, he rosed and switched on the light.

Arabic man: " Light?"

It certainly wasn't a joke when you realised that this man was clad in his briefs on only! We know it's no biggie to sleep with your briefs, but he should have some decency to at least give his three female dorm mates some respect?

Seok: " Ah... ha.. its okay huh.. don't wanna disturb the german girl."
He then switched off the lights.
Three of us started to converse in the dark. Okay, maybe two. Cindy was too disgusted to even speak.
Arabic man: " Looking for something? "
Cindy: "Eh.. eh.. ha.. ."
Seok: " Do you know where's the air-con controller? Are you cold?" (wanting to test his reactions)

Indeed, he did move closer and closer towards us. Straightaway, we knew that something's not right.

Immediately, Seok ran towards the dorm's door open it wide (wide enough for Cindy to exit through). A flurry of actions took place after that.

At the door way.
Arabic man: " Where are you from?"
Seok: " Ehhhhhh.. Singaporeeee" moving a step back. (CINDYYYY HELLPPPPP)
*shooked and kissed seok's hand* " Am from Arab."

That was awfully disgusting. SOMEBODY CHOP MY RIGHT HAND OFF! dammit.

Thanks to that sicko, we had to change rooms. Well of course we couldn't just leave our poor sleepyhead dorm mate, who has not had the slightest idea of what had happened, alone with that sicko. So we brought her along with us.

After much complaints and conpensation, the dorm staff allowed us to switch to Room 22. The only available room left. 3 beds, with one already occupied by a woman. Therefore both of us had to squeeze into one bed while that german girl on the other.

What a night. Ah sod it!

Day Three (Sat ♦ 10/9/05)

Right after our breakfast, we set off to see the most talkabout attraction in town - The Petrona Towers.

However we didn't get the tickets to the top, resorted to posing under the hot sun to satisfy the narcissistic us.

The Petrona Towers.

Some japanese restuarant.

Times Square's indoor roller coaster was next.

Saw our very own Singapore's idol finalist- Leandra with her boyfriend. Who cares anyway? Ha!

30RM entrance fee, and you'll get to 'enjoy' unlimited rides.

Took roller coaster for 4 times, with our last 2 rounds having the front seats.

Our initial plan, which was to crash a mod party, was cancelled. Brought our body to the extreme, and we're starving badly after the rides.

Plastic bag somebody!

Anyway after a quick bite in Times Square and grabbing cheap popcorns, we hurried down to The Vintage Shop at BB plaza for some retail therapy.

KL was known for being a no-joke place for tourist, and indeed it was really no joke. Coming from Singapore, where everything is fine and dandy, it's quite a surprised to witness a shop robbery in KL. Not exactly those bang bang and shoot sorta shop robbery that you have always seen on tv, it's just 2 uncles stealing Baleno clothings. Anti-Climax? Sorry! haha

And then, it was FRANGIPANI!

Chilling in Frangipani Bar

It was still early when we took these pics hence the emptiness.

We couldn't resist the temptation to pub. Who could? Imagine the most happening gay bar in the city, is just a street across your lodge. Heaven!

Our rating for Frangipani Bar - /

Selling Points - friendly staffs, nice balcony for drunkards to chill,  near to pondok lodge, nice crowds, no cover charge.

The flip side - weekends are not as happening as friday night, and drinks a tad expensive, can be quite boring if you're not into gays.

Seok settled for martini and her usual submarine (but this time with a baileys shot dumped right into tiger beer, omg, wrong combination! the texture was just like vomit! Cindy thought it tasted good like oats meal. goodness), while Cindy sipped her cocktail away like a baby. Besides these, we got treated to a glass of Long Island from getting the bartender's age.

Oh yes, Peter you're 32.

"damn!" *clenched fists*

Before we headed back to our lodge, we went supper with our new friends who turned the table into a political debate. For sensitive reasons, we shall not get into the real conversations.

'round 4am "Night Seok," was heard.

Day Four (Sunday ♦ 11/09/05)

We set our handphones' alarm at 9 am and as usual Seok had to wake Cindy up.

The familiar flight of stairway leading to Rooftop garden.

We would definitely revisit Pondok Lodge anytime again. We are missing those fellow backpackers we had met there. The two german dorm mates, Lercy, new zealander guy who saw us leaving our marks on the rooftop's table, singaporean guy who borrowed touch light from us and of course not forgeting the two hot japanese guys! Heh. It's a pity we didn't have the opportunity to take pictures with all of them. Argh.

Throughout this entire trip, both of us had learnt alot more about each other. For example, Cindy's the big muzzy sotong while Seok's the clumsy lobster gorilla. Well at least there is a balance, took good care of each other and that's how we suvived through this trip.

Cheers to many more adventures to come!

Back to Singapore, Back to reality.

Returned to the place where we first stepped foot on, and from there we waved KL our last goodbye.

Signing off,
The Evil Kids

Baby, you spin me right round.

1957 - The Classic Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster

Discovered it on our stroll to Holland Village. How we wish we could just hop in for a hot ride. Skipping fast right around the moon, like a bullet train out of town. Gimme, gimme, gimme. Give us a ride!

It's saturday night, evil kids side by side. Sexy mamas are of no sight. When will they arrive, still waiting for that ride.

Ah you shut up you!

What would a nightout be without the usual piffle talk and cheap booze like such? Reminiscing the KL trip, debating on which country to travel to next, how Cindy instinctively feel that Seok would stay single for a long time to come and she herself would die as a spinster. How melancholic.

See those bottle caps? Cindy had this retarded idea that we blindfold ourselves, and by using merely our instincts, we had to tally the bottle caps to their respective bottles. As proven, both of us do not have much luck, do we?

Baby let's go,

the evil kids

Coming from the land where the beat is low and the birds sing a bad tune, we had no other option than to watch cartoons our whole childhood. But now that we're older, wiser, and with our parents crazy decision to stop subscribing to Cartoon Networks, we decided it's time we fly. However, we very much love to swing dance along the streets on weekends, miles per hour, making a fool out of ourselves and talk piffle. Eventually, naturally, we would find ourselves enjoying the almost mid-night breeze at Esplanade before catching the last train home. You can say that we pretty much have nothing else better to do.

This is our adventure log. Come venture with us.

Cheerios,

Cindy & Seok (The Evil Kids)
